Souad Massi is an Algerian singer and guitarist born in 1972 in Bab El Oued, Algiers. Raised in a music-loving family, she trained in guitar and singing from a young age, first performing on stage in 1989 with the flamenco group Les Trianas d'Alger, then with the Kabyle rock band Atakor. Facing threats over her outspoken views, she left Algeria for France, where her performance at the 1999 Femmes d'Algérie concert led to a record deal with Island Records. Her debut album, "Raoui" (2001), revealed a distinctive style blending folk, rock, and Middle Eastern and African influences. With her warm voice and socially conscious lyrics, Souad Massi has become one of the leading voices of contemporary Algerian music on the international stage.
